This is one of those stories you really have to see to believe. It began when a hitchhiker was picked up by police in north Queensland - it ended 10 months later in a tiny cell in the middle of the South Australian desert. It is, of course, the story of Cornelia Rau - how she was locked away and abandoned. A story of monumental bungling and indifference, especially in the Department of Immigration. It's exposed, once and for all, abysmal failings in the way we treat the sick and the vulnerable. In short, it should never ever have happened.
