Why did US soldier Travis King cross into North Korea?

American soldier Travis King, who is believed to be in custody in North Korea, had crossed the border "wilfully and without authorisation", according to US officials.

Before doing so, he joined an orientation tour of the Joint Security Area, which is part of the 160-mile demilitarised zone separating South and North Korea.
