Many Canadians received a payment from the government last week — but it was not clear why.
Throughout the year, Canadians pay a carbon tax on carbon-heavy goods and services like gas. The tax is meant to discourage pollution and reward pro-environment behaviour. The government promised Canadians the entire amount raised with the carbon tax would be refunded or rebated back - but in installments.
