White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and John Kirby, coordinator for strategic communications for the national security council, are expected to speak during a daily press briefing on Thursday, taking questions on China, the sentencing of Brittney Griner and monkeypox.

Kirby said that the nine-year sentence handed down to U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner was "reprehensible in its scope" and again stressed that she was being wrongfully detained.

Asked if Russia would accept a prisoner swap that wasn't "one-for-one" or two-for-two, Kirby said they put forward a serious proposal to return Griner and Paul Whelan to the U.S.

The briefing also came after the Biden administration declared monkeypox a national health emergency.

The monkeypox outbreak has infected more than 6,600 Americans so far.

Jean-Pierre said that the earlier announcement by the Department of Health and Human Services (HSS) declaring monkeypox a public health emergency would help accelerate vaccine production and distribution.

The announcement will free up federal money and other resources to fight the virus, which may cause fever, body aches, chills, fatigue, and pimple-like bumps on many parts of the body.

Kirby also addressed China firing long-range explosive projectiles in waters off Taiwan's coasts as part of military exercises following the departure of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. He condemned the launches and military activity, saying the U.S. would not be deterred from operating in the seas and skies of the Western Pacific.
