The United Nations says that every hour, five women are killed by members of their own family.
With the treatment of women in countries like Afghanistan and Iran in the spotlight, the UN is launching 16 days of activism. The aim is to raise awareness of what it calls "alarming" rates of femicide, where women or girls are killed simply because they're female. Protests have also taken place in Western countries, such as in France and Spain, to highlight the problem of domestic abuse.
