United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Jeremy Laurence said during a press conference on Friday that the ongoing violence in the occupied West Bank is having a “terrible impact” on both Palestinians and Israelis.
The official also called for an “immediate end to the violence,” later raising concerns for an escalation in the use of advanced military weaponry by Israel” — which he claimed includes helicopter gunships and drones.
Airstrikes on Jenin refugee camp represented a "major intensification of the use of weaponry more generally associated with the conduct of armed hostilities, rather than a law enforcement situation," Laurence said.
Hundreds of Israeli settlers on Wednesday stormed into a Palestinian town in the West Bank settlement, setting ablaze dozens of cars and homes to avenge the deaths of four Israelis killed by Palestinian gunmen the previous day, residents said.
The settler attack came as the Israeli military deployed additional forces across the occupied West Bank, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans to build 1,000 new settler homes in response to the deadly shooting.
