The number of young Americans in juvenile detention dropped by 77 percent over the last two decades, from more than 100,000 to just over $25,000, according to data from the federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention published late last year.
Yet, for those still in contact with the justice system, barriers remain after release. To discuss the challenges youth face post-incarceration, PBS NewsHour digital anchor Nicole Ellis spoke with youth justice advocate Liz Ryan, recently appointed by President Joe Biden to lead the U.S. Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
