National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said Wednesday that he will meet with the "Gang of Eight" — members of Congress who are briefed on intelligence — to discuss what one congressman has described as an “urgent matter” dealing with U.S. national security.
Earlier in the day, Rep. Mike Turner, the Republican chair of the House Intelligence Committee, warned that his committee had “identified an urgent matter with regard to a destabilizing foreign military capability.” He urged the White House to declassify the information.
During a White House news briefing, Sullivan said he would meet on Thursday with Turner and other members, some of whom he had already spoken to.
“I personally reached out to the Gang of Eight. It is highly unusual, in fact, for the national security adviser to do that,” Sullivan said.
Rep. Jim Himes, the ranking Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, acknowledged that the classified information raised by Turner was “significant” but “not a cause for panic.”
