Former President Donald Trump knew within 15 minutes of leaving his Ellipse rally that a violent attack had begun on the U.S. Capitol, but would not intercede for hours, Rep. Elaine Luria, D-Va., said on July 21 as the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack presented its findings to the public.

The hearing focused on what Trump was doing during the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol in an effort to interrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s presidential victory.

“A White House employee informed the president as soon as he returned to the Oval [Office] about the riot at the Capitol,” Luria said, adding that Trump did not act against the riot and instead went into the West Wing dining room with the TV on for more than two and a half hours.

“There was no official record of what President Trump did while in the dining room.”

Luria said that official call logs and the presidential diary do not show entries during that time. A White House photographer was not allowed to document Trump in those moments too.

In the year since its creation, the committee has conducted more than 1,000 interviews, seeking critical information and documents from people witness to, or involved in, the violence that day.
