President Joe Biden announced in his State of the Union speech Tuesday that the U.S. is closing its airspace to Russian planes over the invasion of Ukraine.

“Tonight I am announcing that we will join our allies in closing off American air space to all Russian flights – further isolating Russia – and adding an additional squeeze on their economy.,” he said.

It’s a move that adds to the measures NATO and Western nations have taken against Russia after President Vladimir Putin decided to invade Ukraine. This includes financial sanctions that targeted Russia’s economy.

“The Ruble has lost 30 percent of its value. The Russian stock market has lost 40 percent of its value and trading remains suspended. Russia’s economy is reeling and Putin alone is to blame,” Biden said.

Biden’s speech heavily criticized the Russian president, saying that “when dictators do not pay a price for their aggression, they cause more chaos.”
Biden also promised more support for Ukraine, including $1 billion in direct assistance.
