UN General Assembly members will vote on a resolution condemning annexation by Russia of four Ukrainian provinces. Russia has been lobbying for a secret ballot instead of a public vote. Ukraine and allies have denounced the sham referenda in Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia as “illegal and coercive”. The draft resolution backed by western countries would condemn Russia's "illegal so-called referenda" and the "attempted illegal annexation". This UN action is similar to the one taken in 2014 after Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimea.
