Former Vice President and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden told supporters in South Carolina that his campaign “was just getting started.” Speaking as New Hampshire primary results were still being reported on Feb. 11, Biden downplayed his poor showing in Iowa and New Hampshire saying those two contests are “the opening bell, not the closing bell.” He added the country had yet to hear from the overwhelming majority of African Americans and Latino voters, including those in South Carolina and Nevada. Biden largely conceded defeat in New Hampshire earlier in the day when he left the state hours before the polls closed and headed to South Carolina. New Hampshire was the second contest in the Democratic primary race after Iowa voters caucused Feb. 3. Former mayor Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Bernie Sanders nearly tied for first place in that state, although an official winner has not been declared because of technical issues with reporting the results and an ongoing recanvassing effort.
