India would be guided by a vision of “democracy, inclusion and sustainability,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said during a speech before a joint session of Congress on Thursday.

“A spirit of democracy, inclusion and sustainability defines us. It also shapes our outlook to the world. India grows while being responsible about our planet,” Modi said, adding “Indian culture deeply respects the environment and our planet.”

The Indian prime minister cited examples of his nation’s work to increase renewable energy, including solar capacity, and he urged the United States Congress to make sustainability a mass movement.

“Our vision is pro-planet progress. Our vision is pro-planet prosperity. Our vision is pro-planet people,” he said.

Modi’s address was one stop on his state visit to cement partnerships on key issues with the U.S. Earlier in the day, Modi was welcomed by President Joe Biden at the White House. His visit has also been the target of criticism for the human rights conditions under his leadership.
