Bruce Castor accused Democrats of imputing “some imaginary meaning” to Trump’s remarks to his supporters on Jan. 6, referring specifically to his call to the crowd to “peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.” Castor said that Trump also criticized the actions of “left-wing anarchists and rioters” saying this made his “disdain for political violence” clear. While Trump said the word “peacefully” only once during his speech, he used the word “fight” 20 times.
Castor spoke Feb. 12 as the former president’s defense team offered their case for why the Senate should acquit Trump of inciting an insurrection for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump was impeached by the House in January, while he was still in office.
