In a news conference Thursday at the conclusion of the NATO summit in Washington, President Joe Biden contrasted his swift actions to support Ukraine against Russia's invasion with former President Donald Trump's lack of commitment to defending European allies against Russian aggression.

"My predecessor has made it clear he has no commitment to NATO," Biden said. "He's made it clear that he would feel no obligation to honor Article 5."

Biden's much-anticipated press conference comes amid intense scrutiny of his fitness to stay in the 2024 race for the White House after a stumbling debate performance in June.

"Every American must ask herself or himself :Is the world safer with NATO ? Are you safer? Is your family safer? I believe the American people know . The answer to all those questions is yes. And I believe the American people understand that America is stronger, stronger because of our alliances," Biden says.
