White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said on Wednesday that the Port of Los Angeles is going to expand its 24/7 operations to ease supply chain bottlenecks ahead of the holiday season, while large carriers including Walmart, FedEx and UPS “are using more off-peak and nighttime hours” to speed up the shipment of goods across the country.

Psaki told reporters that while U.S. President Joe Biden could not guarantee there would be no holiday disruptions, "what we can do is use every lever at the federal government disposal to reduce delays."

The supply crisis has been driven in part by the COVID-19 pandemic, as sales of durable goods jumped amid worker shortages and transportation hub slowdowns.

The announcement also came as the United States is set to reopen its land borders with Canada and Mexico in early November to travellers who are fully vaccinated.
