The state of Barinas, birthplace of the late revolutionary President Hugo Chavez, is at the centre of a dispute between Venezuela's government and the opposition.
The Chavez family has ruled here for more than 20 years but the late president's brother, Argenis Chavez, recently announced he was stepping down as governor after an electoral scandal.
The Supreme Court then disqualified leading opposition candidate Freddy Superlano, saying the election should be scrapped and held again.
Now all eyes are on the opposition's capacity to unite to defeat the ruling party in a new vote set for January.
