US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump lit the National Christmas Tree located in the northeast quadrant of the Ellipse near the White House in Washington DC on Thursday.
Speaking at the event, Donald Trump said, "At Christmas, we remember this eternal truth, every person is a beloved child of God. As one grateful nation, we praise the joy of family, the blessings of freedom and the miracle of Christmas. On behalf of Melanie and our entire family, Merry Christmas and God bless you all."
The National Christmas Tree is a 30-foot (nine-meter) evergreen tree decorated with 50,000 lights and 450 giant white star ornaments.
The tree lighting ceremony dates back to 1923, and this year's celebration included performances by Jessie James Decker, Spensha Baker, Colton Dixon, the Air Force rock band Max Impact, Chevel Shepherd, Tucson Boys Chorus, the United States Marine Band and West Tennessee Youth Chorus.
