The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday struck down affirmative action in college admissions, forcing institutions of higher education to look for new ways to achieve diverse student bodies.
The court’s conservative majority overturned admissions plans at Harvard and the University of North Carolina, the nation’s oldest private and public colleges, respectively.
Chief Justice John Roberts said for too long universities have “concluded, wrongly, that the touchstone of an individual’s identity is not challenges bested, skills built or lessons learned but the color of their skin. Our constitutional history does not tolerate that choice."
U.S. President Joe Biden said in remarks following the court’s decision that he “strongly disagree(s)” with the court’s decision, adding it “can’t be the last word.”
“You know, I know today’s court decision is a severe disappointment to many people, including me. But we cannot let the decision be a permanent setback for the country,” he said.
He said he would direct the U.S. Department of Education to analyze what practices will help build more inclusive and diverse student bodies and what practices impede that goal.
