Israeli airstrikes hit Gaza's southern cities of Khan Younis and Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of civilians are seeking shelter. Israel's Defense Minister says in the next stage of the war, the military will take a more targeted approach in the north of the enclave, but continue to pursue Hamas leaders in the south. Hamas is designated as a terror group by several countries.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has embarked on a week-long crisis tour to the Middle East in an attempt to stop the conflict from spreading beyond the Gaza Strip. First leg of the diplomatic marathon is Turkey, where he has met President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose vocal support of Hamas has raised concerns in the West. Blinken will later travel to Israel, the occupied West Bank and five Arab nations.

For more on this, we talk to Sinan Cidd, Associate Professor of National Security Studies at the Marine Corps University in Washington D.C.

And we talk to DW correspondent Julia Hahn, who is standing by in Istanbul.
