Authorities in the United States have fully approved the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for everybody aged 16 and above. It had been in emergency use since December.
The Food and Drug Administration decision brings about the first US government licence for a vaccine against the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. The disease has killed more than 628,500 people in the US since the pandemic began, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
There is hope the move will boost public confidence and counter vaccination hesitancy at a time when the number of new cases is rising.
