The presidents of Latin America’s two largest countries have held back from congratulating Joe Biden for winning the US presidential race.
Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro has already issued a challenge to the president-elect, threatening him with retaliation if Biden made good on threats to Bolsonaro over the fires in the Amazon.
Mexico’s Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said it was a question of principle: He did not want to meddle in the US’s internal politics and would wait until all legal disputes were resolved.
Al Jazeera’s Monica Yanakiew reports from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
