The Pentagon has confirmed sharp reductions in the number of US troops in Afghanistan and Iraq by mid-January, just before President Donald Trump leaves office.
Both countries will be left with a contingent of 2,500.
But senior figures in the military and Trump's Republican Party have doubts about the decision.
