The United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution on Friday demanding an immediate end to violence and criminal activity in Haiti, and imposed sanctions on Jimmy Chérizier, the leader of a powerful gang federation in the country.

Chérizier has been accused of threatening the peace, stability and security of Haiti, and now faces a travel ban as well as a asset freeze and arms embargo. The council has also established a committee that could designate others to be put on a sanctions list.

The gang leader and his federation, the "G9 Family and Allies," has also been accused of blocking the entrance of a main fuel terminal in Port-au-Prince for more than a month as fuel, water and other basic supplies grow scarce amid a cholera outbreak.
