The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has backed a Palestinian bid to become a full member.

The assembly adopted a resolution Friday with 143 votes in favour and nine voting against the measure, including the United States and Israel. Twenty-five other countries, including Canada, abstained.

The vote does not give the Palestinians full UN membership but simply recognizes them as qualified to join. The resolution calls on the Security Council to admit the Palestinians as a member.

In April, the U.S. cast a veto in the UN Security Council to deny Palestinians full membership, but has said that it supports a “two-state solution.”
