The UN Special Envoy on Myanmar, who is one of the few international figures who has been in contact with the generals in charge, believes the country now risks isolation.

Myanmar's military earlier repeated its promise to hold fresh elections and relinquish power, as the former leader Aung San Suu Kyi faces new charges that has already seen international condemnation.

Christine Burgener said she would continue to call for Myanmar's military to 'refrain from violence' in the suppression of the ongoing anti-coup protests there.

China, also issued a rare message to the generals by its ambassador Chen Hai comment, that 'the current development in Myanmar is absolutely not what China wants to see.'
