In an address to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Tuesday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned what he said were “clear violations” of international humanitarian law in Gaza, while also denouncing the Oct. 7 attack on Israel by Hamas that resulted in some 1,400 deaths.
“Let me be clear: no party to an armed conflict is above international humanitarian law,” he said.
Guterres said he was “thankful” humanitarian aid was getting into Gaza, but said fuel supplies in the besieged enclave would run out in a matter of days and that the consequences of that would be devastating.
“In addition, our UN fuel supplies in Gaza will run out in a matter of days and that without be another disaster. Without fuel, aid cannot be delivered, hospitals will not have power and drinking water cannot be purified or even pumped.”
Gutteres’ comments came as Israel’s Foreign Affairs Minister Eli Cohen dismissed calls for a ceasefire, adding it was Israel’s “duty” to destroy Hamas.
