Ukrainians broke out candles at a restaurant in the capital city of Kyiv on Friday as power cuts gripped the nation due to air strikes on power stations, which President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says have affected about 30 per cent of their facilities.

Despite the power cuts, blackouts and calls to minimize the use of power, diners said these were temporary and necessary measures, and that Russia would not win.

"So I think they will not succeed, we are very strong in spirit. This means no one and nothing can break us," Kyiv resident Viktoria said.

In Mykolaiv, relief workers distributed hot meals to people impacted by a blackout on Saturday. World Central Kitchen worked to distribute hot meals to hospital patients and people whose homes have been hit in rocket attacks.
