After nearly 60 percent of the Ukrainian presidential election first round votes being counted, comedian Volodymyr Zelenskiy looks set to face incumbent President Petro Poroshenko in the runoff vote on April 21, Ukraine’s Central Election Commission (CEC) announced on Monday in Kiev.
With 58.66 percent of the votes counted, Zelenskiy stood at 30.33 percent to Poroshenko’s 16.45 percent.
According to the CEC, 13.07 percent of voters backed former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko with ex-Energy Minister Yuri Boyko on fourth place at 11.56 percent.
“It’s really important for us to tell you that not only the day of the vote but the night of the vote, when they counted the votes, it went quietly, without systemic violations,” CEC chairperson Tatiana Slipachuk said.
The commission said 63.48 percent of the electorate went to the polls.
The second round of the presidential election will be held on Sunday, April 21.
