"Vladimir Putin has lost authority and legitimacy within Russia," says Mr Steele.

Sergei Shoigu - the Russian defence minister that Yevgeny Prigozhin wanted to topple - "is finished", he adds.

While Putin will not want to get rid of him in the "immediate aftermath" of the mutiny to avoid looking weak, Mr Shoigu will not hold his post "for much longer".

Mr Ingram adds the Wagner leader has "embarrassed Shoigu" by capturing one of Russia's largest cities "bloodlessly".
