Ukraine's Western allies are pledging more support, with Russia on the verge of seizing Sievierodonetsk in the fight for the eastern Donbas region.

Russia released images on Wednesday of cruise missiles being fired at Ukraine after the country refused to surrender the city.

About 80 per cent of that city has been seized by Russian forces — but the industrial zone, including the chemical plant where civilians and soldiers are sheltering, remains under Ukrainian control.

Crystal Goomansingh reports on the city's status, the help Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is pleading for, and the weapons Canada is planning to send.
