Ukrainian presidential candidate and incumbent President Petro Poroshenko addressed his supporters after the first round of the presidential election in Kiev on Sunday, promising to start the process of returning Crimea and Donbass under Ukraine's sovereignty.
"Shortly after April 21 [second round of the presidential election], we enter a very important phase of getting occupied Crimea and Donbass back under Ukrainian sovereignty," the president said, adding that "We will get our boys and girls, who are illegally kept in Russian prisons, back."
He also mentioned Russian President Vladimir Putin in his speech, saying the Russian leader "dreams of a mild, soft, nice, giggling, unexperienced, weak, ideologically undetermined and politically indifferent Ukrainian president. Would we really give him such a chance?"
According to the national exit poll, actor-turned-comedian Volodymyr Zelenskiy won the first round with 30.4 percent of vote, with Poroshenko second on 17.8 percent and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko third on 14.2 percent.
Zelenskiy and Poroshenko are now set to take part in the run-off election on April 21.
