Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko introduced Metropolitan Epifaniy, the newly-elected head of a just created independent Ukrainian Orthodox Church, after a unification council meeting in Kiev, Saturday.
"The Lord heard our requests and gave us this long-awaited unity. We together were able to overcome different temptations, overcome adversity and unite in a single church," stressed Epifaniy.
The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople Bartholomew I, the spiritual leader of the world's Orthodoxy, recognised the independence of the breakaway church from the Russian Orthodox Church on October 11.
The Holy Synod, the highest governing body of the Russian Orthodox Church, cut ties with the Constantinople Patriarchate, after it recognised the new self-governing, or autocephalous, Ukrainian Church.
