Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said he had the backing of "an absolute majority" of European Union countries to impose sanctions on Russia, as a response to the Kerch Strait incident. The Ukrainian leader was speaking in Kiev on Sunday.
Poroshenko also stated that an "appropriate toolkit" had been created to determine the sanctions in question, and added that both Ukraine and the EU, "will not delay with this issue."
The president also said he had received information about the alleged deployment of Russian troops and tanks on the border. "How do we react to this?" he queried, as he sought to justify the temporary imposition of martial law in Ukraine.
"How do you comment on 80,000 servicemen that appeared at our border? What about a sharp increase in the amount of artillery? And a sharp increase in military presence in the waters of the Sea of Azov? What about the actual occupation of the Kerch Strait, which is continued, and the partial occupation of the Azov Sea?," he stated.
