UK contemplates living with COVID-19 as restrictions end

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson ended COVID-19 restrictions in England starting Thursday, including dropping mask mandates and COVID-19 passes, returning England's COVID rules to how they were last July.

Omicron tested Johnson's plan to withstand winter without restrictions, and the experience has only cemented his aim to learn to live with the disease.

Omicron fuelled a surge in cases to new records in December, but hospitalizations and deaths did not increase to the same extent.

Johnson has a strong political imperative to lift COVID-19 measures. He is facing the biggest political crisis of his career as police investigate lockdown gatherings at his offices, a possible breach of laws he himself imposed. Many in his party have been strenuous critics of COVID-19 restrictions.
