UK agency recommends non-AstraZeneca vaccine for people under 30

Britain's Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation said on Wednesday that those under 30 years of age would be offered an alternative to the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, due to a very rare potential side effect of blood clots.

The advice provided comes after the European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced earlier in the day that "unusual blood clotting" should be listed as a possible side-effect to the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, though still stressed people should continue to use vaccines that are available as the benefits of the specific COVID-19 vaccine outweighed the risks.

The United Kingdom's medicines regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), echoed the EMA and said the risk was "extremely small" and MHRA had not yet concluded the vaccine was responsible.

Britain's deputy chief medical officer Jonathan Van-Tam stressed the vaccine change would have a negligible impact on the vaccine rollout and Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he did not see a change in the plan to ease restrictions after the concluding results of the AstraZeneca vaccine investigation.
