President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is set to face an election that he called in May, an opportunity for him to consolidate his grip on power after 20 years in office.
Erdoğan has declared a state of emergency following the devastation, but with the magnitude of the destruction and anger over his government's response in the after math, his leadership may now be in jeopardy.
