Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was among the world leaders to offer their countries’ assistance following a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake that toppled buildings and killed thousands in Turkey and Syria.

Speaking in Ottawa on Monday, Trudeau said Canada is “looking at how we can help directly and immediately” but also exploring ways to be there for those impacted in Turkey and Syria over the long term.

Other countries, including Germany and the United States, have begun mobilizing personnel and resources following requests from Turkey and Syria as the two nations deal with the fallout from the tragedy.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Secretary-General has said staff is on the ground assessing the needs in Turkey and Syria and is calling on all nations to “work together to assist those hit by this disaster.”
