Speaking to Global News Washington Bureau chief Jackson Proskow in an interview, police officer Daniel Hodges – who was famously seen crushed by a mob on Jan. 6, 2021 as he pushed back rioters at the U.S. Capitol – said that he was “glad” to see that the indictment of former president Donald Trump over his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss “finally happened.”

“It’s just one step in the process though. It’s been a long-time coming, but in so many ways, it just marks the beginning,” Hodges said.

He added that this was “absolutely” a “vital step” towards accountability, and that the justice system has to see the charges play out in court, otherwise it would encourage “future would-be despots” to act.

Hodges also said that it was “sad” to see continued Republican support for the former president in the aftermath of Jan. 6, and that it speaks to the fear of politicians of their own voting block.
