Despite voting to acquit Donald Trump on the single article of impeachment for incitement of insurrection on Saturday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell spoke about the events of Jan. 6, when supporters of Trump stormed the Capitol building as lawmakers were voting to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election.

McConnell said that there was "no question" Trump was "practically and morally responsible" for provoking the events that took place Jan. 6 and that his actions preceding the riot were "a disgraceful dereliction of duty."

"The people who stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president," he told the chamber just minutes after he and 42 other Republican senators voted to acquit the former president.

The minority leader also went on to say that though Trump was acquitted in the court of impeachment, he is still "liable for everything he did while in office," saying that Trump "didn't get away with anything yet."
