In a post-courtroom appearance where his lawyers argued that the former U.S. president Donald Trump should be immune from charges that he illegally sought to overturn the results of the 2020 election, Trump said he “did nothing wrong.”

Inside the courtroom, Trump’s lawyers told a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit that his case should be dismissed on grounds of the long-held rule that former presidents cannot be held criminally liable for carrying out official duties.

D. John Sauer, Trump’s attorney, told the judges that authorizing the prosecution would “open a Pandora's Box from which that nation may never recover." Sauer further suggested that U.S. presidents must be impeached and removed from office by Congress before being prosecuted. Though Trump has already been impeached twice, he was not convicted by the Senate.

“When they talk about threat to democracy, that's your real threat to democracy,” Trump said following the appeal. “And I feel that as a president, you have to have immunity. Very simple.”
