Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Friday night that Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, two Canadians detained in China for more than 1,000 days had been released and were on their way home.

Their detainment came just days after Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada over an extradition request by the U.S. She was released earlier Friday after she reached a deal over charges against her.

China has repeatedly denied the two cases were linked, but several experts like former foreign affairs minister John Manley said the timeline of the cases made it "difficult to believe" China wasn't moving the cases in tandem with the developments in Meng's trial.

Trudeau said that his government and officials were now focused on ensuring the two men land safely in Canada, which is expected to happen Saturday.
