Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau affirmed his support for the “centrality of ASEAN’ in the Indo-Pacific region on Wednesday, saying his country and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) bloc share similar values.

Speaking at the ASEAN-Canada Summit in Jakarta, Trudeau emphasized the importance of transparency and of international rules to achieve growth.

Meanwhile, Canada also expects to finalize a free trade agreement with ASEAN following the launch of the Canada-ASEAN strategic partnership, Trudeau said.

The move by the organization is a symbolic gesture that recognizes Canada’s expanded presence in the region.
