More than 6,000 hectares of land have been destroyed in parts of southwestern France as firefighters continued to battle treacherous wildfires that have forced thousands to evacuate and left some buildings damaged.
In Belin-Beliet, a thick cloud of smoke lingered in the air as fires raged outside the outskirts of the settlement. Martin Guesperau, a local security official, said the fires were creating a "bitter fight" and had surprised them with its direction.
"It created its own wind, its own story, its own movement," he said.
In the village of Hostens, found in the department of Gironde, police had to go door-to-door telling people to leave as the fire advanced, with the smoke filling the skies nearby.
