Canadian Olympic swimmers Margaret Mac Neil, Kylie Masse, Kayla Sanchez and Taylor Ruck spoke Wednesday with Global News about making waves at the Tokyo Olympics over the past two weeks and bringing home six medals, including one gold.
Mac Neil, who won Canada's first gold at these games, spoke about how she's been feeling since her victory saying the moment still hasn't sunk in, calling it still "such a surreal moment" even as people ask to see her medal. Masse spoke about the teamwork and camaraderie between the swimmers, saying after the challenging past year, they have stuck by each others' side and created "such a strong bond," calling it motivating.
Sanchez also spoke about Penny Oleksiuk becoming Canada's most decorated Olympian, saying it was "really cool" and calling her a great swimmer.
The topic of mental health among athletes was also discussed, including Ruck's decision to share her own struggles and in turn inspiring many people. She said after competing in this year's games, she advised current and future athletes to "have fun and not put too much pressure on everything." She also thanked her teammates for being a support system and that it's important to have such a system set up.
