Canadian vessels are returning home after searching for the Titan submersible off the coast of Newfoundland. All five crew members perished at sea, after what the U.S. coast guard calls a “catastrophic implosion.”

A debris field was discovered on the ocean floor near the Titanic wreck, and investigations are now underway. There are now new questions around the vessel's structural engineering.

Oceanographer David Gallo hopes there are answers that lead to safer vehicles, with this disaster being the first implosion of a submersible with passengers on board. He says it's something the community has feared — but expected.

Global’s Mike Armstrong reports.
