Fur seals are synonymous with New Zealand's tourist hot spot, Kaikoura. They are part of the ecosystem and part of the tourist appeal of this unique coastline on New Zealand's South Island.
Like large, lumpy cats when on land, and like torpedoes in the water, the seals - or kekeno - are starving and suffering. Over the past seven months, over a thousand fur seals have died on the shores.
Is it over-fishing, climate-change or something else? Alarmed scientists are in a desperate quest to find out more.
