Thousands of demonstrators held a protest on boats floating on Myanmar’s Inle Lake on Thursday, as nationwide protests against a military takeover entered their sixth day.
Video obtained by Reuters showed protesters crowded into boats, carrying banners and signs with pro-democracy slogans and pictures of elected civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been detained by the military since the Feb. 1 coup.
Meanwhile, people from multi-ethnic groups joined in a protest march in Yangon, chanting and demanding for the release of Suu Kyi and president Win Myint. Hundreds also demonstrated at the Chinese embassy, accusing Beijing of supporting the military junta despite Chinese denials.
The military on Thursday called for an end to protests and urged civil servants, many of whom have been absent since the coup, to return to work.
It has justified its takeover, saying the Nov. 8 election, which Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) party won by a landslide, was a fraud. The electoral commission dismissed the army's complaints.
