Storm Ciaran hit the French-Atlantic coast on Tuesday evening, leaving a truck driver dead in France and injuring hundreds across western Europe, and leaving millions of people in the dark.

Wind speeds of over 180 kph left households across France without power and triggered hundreds of flights and scheduled trains to either be delayed, rescheduled or cancelled altogether.

French interior minister Gerland Darmanin said 13,500 firefighters are “Still conducting operations in these difficult conditions” on Thursday, noting seven had been injured.

Parts of Brittany and Normandy are now on red alert for potentially strong winds hitting Thursday evening, with the rest of the northwest on orange alert, officials said.

The tropical storm was born of a powerful jet stream that swept in from the Atlantic, unleashing heavy rainfall and aggressive winds that have already caused heavy flooding in Northern Ireland and parts of Britain.
