Twenty-three-year-old Mara Gomez is the first transgender woman to be authorised to play in the First Division women’s championship in the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
Gomez had been playing in a lower league for Las Malvinas the AFA rubber stamped a transfer after a test proved she had acceptably low levels of testosterone in her blood.
There has been criticism of the decision to let her play. The issue of trans women in sport is so controversial that in the US for example, the Education Department suggested earlier this year that funding could be withdrawn from high schools who allowed transgender athletes to compete as girls.
Gomez is set for her debut with her new side Villa San Carlos this weekend.
